Inspectors ensuring Halifax cranes are ready for Hurricane Fiona

September 23, 2022  By Don Horne

There are an estimated 32 cranes operating in Halifax, N.S., and provincial inspectors are visiting every site to make sure they’re prepared for Hurricane Fiona.

Staff from the Department of Labour have been at work sites around the region this week to check all safety measures are being followed. The Construction Association of Nova Scotia said storm preparations have been happening at sites across the region this week, and has issued a notice to members on its website urging them to be cautious.

A 73-metre tower crane collapsed on South Park Street three years ago during post-tropical storm Dorian. The crane came to rest on top of a 13-storey building that was under construction. No one was injured in that incident but it resulted in several residences and businesses being evacuated.
