Alberta increases allowable on-road weight limits for all-terrain cranes

February 26, 2024  By CHC Staff

EDMONTON – New weight limits for all-terrain cranes approved for use on Alberta’s roads will come into effect on March 1 following a successful pilot project.

Alberta’s Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Devin Dreshin, announced the approval of a permanent increase in the allowable weights of all-terrain cranes following the All-Terrain Crane Pilot Project.

“Effective March 1, 2024, Transportation and Economic Corridors will update its permitting policies to permanently allow increased weights for AT Cranes on Alberta roads, aligning with the weights allowed during the project,” said Dreshen. “This change will reduce red tape for industry and provide certainty for your members on AT Cranes’ road operating requirements.”

This approval comes with help from the Canadian Crane Rental Association’s (CCRA) Weights and Dimensions Committee, a coalition of manufacturers, crane rental companies and engineers formed in 2017 to address allowable crane weights and dimensions across Alberta before quickly expanding their efforts to other provinces.

“We took a collaborative approach with industry and with government,” said the CCRA’s Weights and Dimensions Committee’s co-chair Mike Lavoie. “We learned from one another, improved safety, reduced costs and saved lives.”
