A condo building in downtown Toronto suffered damage after a crane fell on it on Saturday.
The crane – described as a “small, service crane” by Toronto Fire Services Platoon Chief Kevin Shaw – was on top of a condo at 8 The Esplanade. According to reports, the counterbalance fell about six metres onto the roof. The crane itself, which has not been identified, is about six metres tall, he said.
“The crane collapsed, causing some structural damage on the roof, but no danger to any of the floors below. It didn’t get into any of the apartment units,” Shaw told reporters.
There were no injuries reported. The top of the condo is uninhabited as those floors are used for mechanical purposes.
Shaw told reporters there is about 20,000 pounds of counterweight on the crane which shifted and then caused the crane to tip over.
