Ontario association offers scholarships

Applications are now being accepted for a pair of $2,000 scholarships from the Ontario Road Builders’ Association.
The deadline for the scholarships — in civil engineering and civil engineering technology — is May 31, said a news release from the association.
Graduating Ontario high school students are eligible. One scholarship goes to a student entering a civil engineering program at an Ontario university. The other is for a student entering the first year of an engineering technology or technician program at an Ontario college or equivalent.
John Blake, who co-chairs the association’s education committee, said in the news release that it’s important “to offer financial support to those students who are going to become the next generation of road builders.”
Applicants must each submit an essay describing why they are pursuing a post-secondary education in the discipline and also discussing their goals in pursuing such a career.
A key criterion is work experience, “particularly directly related to the civil construction or broader construction industry,” the release said.
Other factors to be considered are “special projects or volunteer activities that demonstrate a commitment to the applicant’s local community, school or charitable organization” as well as recommendations from professors and reference letters from employers.
