RCMP requests prosecutors to consider charges in Kelowna crane collapse case

KELOWNA – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have submitted a report to the BC Prosecution Service regarding the case of the July 2021 Kelowna crane collapse, recommending a charge assessment of criminal negligence causing death.

The incident involved a construction crane in downtown Kelowna that fell while being dismantled, killing four men on-site and a fifth man in a neighbouring building.

Numerous lawsuits toward both the operating company of the crane, Stemmer Construction, and the equipment manufacturer, Liebherr, have surfaced in the years since the incident.

Kelowna RCMP Supt. Kara Triance said that dozens of police officers have been involved in the investigation, which has included the team methodically gathering and analyzing evidence.

“The gravity of this incident and the associated work to understand what happened has been tremendous. We will work to support our partners and our community through the next steps,” Triance said.
