Ontario proposes legislation to fast track major infrastructure projects

The Ontario Government has introduced the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025. If approved, this new act would streamline approval processes for major infrastructure, transit, mining and housing projects.

By simplifying project approval processes, the act aims to minimize delays, lower costs and set service standards for government review times on major projects. Despite this faster process, Ontario shared that environmental standards and Indigenous consultations would be maintained.

New initiatives that would be introduced by the act include the designation of special economic zones for important projects, a new One Project, One Process permitting model to streamline approvals, the construction of a secure energy grid and more.

“When it comes to protecting our province and country’s economic sovereignty from President Trump’s attacks, it cannot be business as usual,” said Energy Minister Stephen Lecce. “We are unveiling a bold plan that ensures Canada is self-reliant, economically independent, and seizing every opportunity to grow our economy and stand on our own two feet.”
