NENZING, Austria – Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH, an Austria-based division of Liebherr focused on heavy construction machinery, has won the ESTA Award in safety for its development of a safety system for protecting crawler cranes working on floating units.

With load charts for work on a floating unit normally only available on paper, Liebherr has integrated load charts into their crawler cranes’ control systems and assisted in curbing overloading and stability risks with its “floating unit operation” mode. This operating mode contains load curves and corresponding load moment limitations, with barge inclination also monitored during operations and displayed to operators.

Liebherr’s operation mode also uses a number of preventative systems, including warning when permissible limit value is exceeded and a preventing the maximum boom angle from being exceeded when loads are set down.

The ESTA Awards are considered one of the highest distinctions in the European crane and heavy lifting sector, with this win being Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH’s second in the safety category since 2022.

“The award is a recognition of our efforts to design safe cranes and construction machines – especially as it is the second award in this category since 2022. As a leading manufacturer of cranes, the safety of job site personnel is of the utmost importance to us. Our digital solutions and assistance systems are a direct result of this commitment,” said Gerhard Frainer, managing director for sales at Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH.
