Crane use climbs in Vancouver

November 3, 2016  By Kevin Cunningham

The Vancouver region has many tower cranes working on its skyline as it did during the construction boom leading up to the 2010 Olympic Games, CTV News reported this spring.

More than 150 fixed towers cranes are working Metro Vancouver, the report said. That ties for the number of cranes during the pre-Olympics boom.

“All of industry right now is struggling to get enough talented people to build what’s out there,” the report quoted Ron Karras of RMG Formwork.

The report also quoted Val Coupal, who has been providing tower cranes in the region for four decades. Coupal, 85, said his company, Coupal Climbing Cranes Ltd., can barely keep up with demand.

“The cranes are about four times bigger than what we started with,” Coupal was quoted on the CTV website.
